MOSCOW, April 15The labeling and traceability system is a systematic solution to the problem of illegal caviar trafficking, which also protects the interests of conscientious fishermen and producers, the press service of the Federal Agency for Fishery reported.
According to the order of the government, the caviar labeling experiment will take place in the country from April 15, 2023 to March 31, 2024.

They stressed that traceability at all stages of the commodity-conducting chain is one of the most effective measures to combat counterfeit and illegal products: in fact, the impossibility of selling illegally harvested aquatic biological resources, including of which is a panacea for poaching.
“Today, the shadow market of red caviar exceeds 4 billion rubles. Illegal production causes significant damage to national fish stocks, illegal products produced without complying with relevant sanitary standards and without confirming its safety are risks to the health and life of citizens,” the department emphasizes.
Thus, the experiment on labeling salmon and sturgeon caviar in Russia will help protect the market from unsafe products, as well as the interests of conscientious fishermen and producers, and create a clean and healthy competitive environment.
Rosrybolovstvo reminded that now another measure is being tested to combat illegal caviar products — restrictions on air travel in the luggage of citizens of salmon caviar of non-industrial production, without documents — over 10 kilograms. The experiment was launched in Kamchatka on November 1, 2022, with plans to expand it to other regions of the Far East.
