VLADIVOSTOK, April 14 Specialists of the Primorsky Aquarium in Vladivostok have received the offspring of genetically modified fish Danio rerio (Danio rerio) GloFish, the institution reports.
Danio GloFish are not found in wildlife. For two decades, these forms of fish have been used in the scientific field to study issues of genetics and cell biology.
«GloFish Danio rerio fish, which arrived at the Primorsky Aquarium in the summer of 2022, gave offspring to which fluorescence genes were transferred — the ability of cells of living organisms under certain conditions emit a glow,» the message says.
Scientists note that the offspring turned out to be very successful: numerous, in several colors. In addition, a large number of fish without any pigmentation was obtained.
So far, the fish have been housed in the Scientific and Adaptation Building, and later they will be moved to the Marine Microworld exhibition for visitors.
The main feature and value of Danio rerio (Danio rerio) GloFish is a bright fluorescent color. In the Primorsky Aquarium you can see Electric Green, Stafire Red and Sunburst Orange.
The color of transgenic zebrafish depends on whose genes were introduced into the DNA of the fish. For example, DNA fragments of the Aequorea victoria jellyfish are inserted into the DNA of green zebrafish, the RFP genes of the red Discosoma coral are inserted in red zebrafish, and fish in the genotype of which combine both genes — yellow.
