Valery Gergiev will present «Iolanta» on the historical stage of the Mariinsky Theater

MOSCOW, 15 Apr. Today, April 15, the premiere of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's one-act opera Iolanta will take place at the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. It will be conducted by Valery Gergiev, the press service of the institution reports.

This is the last opera Tchaikovsky. It was shown for the first time a year before the death of the composer — in 1892.

«Lyrical music, a touching plot and a happy ending make «Iolanthe» a real fairy tale for adults who have not lost faith in miracles,» they say in the theater.

The director is Anna Shishkina, the artist is Pyotr Okunev. Their production is based on Hermann Hertz's play King René's Daughter. It was she who inspired Tchaikovsky to create the opera. The production also contains references to the philosophical texts that Tchaikovsky used to read.
In the center of the plot is the fate of Iolanthe, the daughter of King René. The girl is blind from birth. But she does not know that she is blind. However, her father does not leave the hope that she will be able to see the colors of this world.
Earlier it was reported that Svetlana Zakharova performed the part of Coco Chanel on the Historic Stage of the Bolshoi Theater in the play Gabrielle Chanel.
