WASHINGTON, Apr 27 The International Space Station (ISS) will be deorbited in 2030-2031, NASA chief Bill Nelson said at a congressional hearing Thursday.
«It's getting old and we're going to deorbit it, we'll do it in 2030-2031,» Nelson said at a House Science and Technology Committee budget hearing.
He recalled that after that, work in near-Earth orbit is planned to be carried out at private commercial stations.
The United States, the European Union and Japan have previously announced plans to continue working on the ISS until 2030.
Russia has not yet decided on the final date. Thus, Yury Borisov, General Director of Roskosmos, previously reported to President Vladimir Putin about the decision to withdraw from the ISS project after 2024, but later he also said that Russia would most likely participate in the project until 2028.
