AP correspondents Mstislav Chernov and Evgeny Maloletka, who worked in besieged Mariupol, received the Pulitzer Prize

Ukrainian documentary filmmaker Mstislav Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and producer Vasilisa Stepanenko have been awarded the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. This is the only award that comes with a gold medal.

All three winners are employees of the Associated Press. Together with them, the European correspondent of the agency Laurie Hinnant received the award. During the siege of Mariupol, Chernov, Maloletka and Stepanenko were in the city. Their most famous work is a report from a maternity hospital that came under artillery fire from the Russian army.

In April, Maloletka received a World Press Photo award for a photograph from Mariupol showing a wounded pregnant woman being carried during shelling.
