By the May holidays, mutton has risen in price most of all

Price surprise for those who like to relax in nature

As soon as holidays approach in Russia, especially long holidays, a rise in price is coming. This May weekend is no exception. So, in the last week of April (from May 25 to May 2), according to Rosstat, mutton jumped in price by a good 2.1%. In just seven days.

Price surprise for outdoor enthusiasts

We will grill pork in the spring forest. Although it is not recommended to abuse it, it is cheap. True, pork could not resist rising prices: on the eve of the Spring and Labor Day added 0.2% in value.

Probably, analysts will still say their weighty word about how much the May Day holidays cost dear Russians. So far, the mutton we have already mentioned is knocking out of the average statistical indicators of the growth in prices for products from the consumer basket. And onion: since mid-April, according to Rosstat, it has risen in price by more than 23%. In large supermarkets, a kilogram costs 76 rubles, and at vegetable stalls it is even more expensive — up to 90 rubles. Experts will definitely mention this fact, because onions are also required for barbecue.

We can say that this is a price surprise for Russians for the May holidays. Today, a kilogram of already cut lamb in the retail network costs 700-750 rubles.

– we ask Vladimir Dvalishvili, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Head of the Department of Genetics and Farm Animal Breeding of the All-Russian Institute of Animal Husbandry.

– At this time, the demand for lamb, of course, increases, for the holidays, manufacturers and trade try to raise the price of their goods, – he explains. – But here is the main point – the market supply decreases. Young lamb is sold, as a rule, in November-December. Sheep breeders leave a minimum livestock for the winter to reduce feed consumption.

In a word, sheep are sold for meat in autumn and winter. And now a kind of «dead season». Mass lambing will begin in January-February, the first deliveries will begin by July. In my opinion, this is the main reason for the rise in price – in sentence reduction.

– 10 percent. Until in the middle of summer young animals from Kalmykia and Dagestan are brought to the Moscow region. Now they are also being transported, but these volumes do not cover the needs. Muscovites are preparing for trips to nature…

– Young lamb, up to 10 months old. If older, then it is already tough, and it has a large amount of fat. The most optimal age – 7-8 months. And breeds should be meat. In particular, it is Kuibyshev or «Ile-de-France»…

But there are bright sides in the current price palette. The beginning of the spring-summer period went on the offensive against high vegetable prices. In general, over the past week they fell by 0.8%. That doesn't mean anything to the consumer. How can you notice such a «cheapening»?

But here's what he will pay attention to – cucumbers became cheaper by 8%; tomatoes, which rose in price a couple of weeks ago, also dropped in price – by 4.4%.

According to the executive director of the Fruit and Vegetable Union of Russia Andrey Kazakov, our cucumbers are all domestically produced – unlike tomatoes, which we import about 40%. But now greenhouse crops have begun to actively become cheaper, because seasonal complexes are connected to capital winter greenhouses with the onset of spring. Every day the offer, including for domestic tomatoes, will increase, and the prices – decrease accordingly.
