In Russia, they create a method for detecting fires before the appearance of a flame

MOSCOW, May 3rd. Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University are developing a program for the early detection of fires based on the gas composition of the air. According to them, this will prevent the transition of ignition into fires in offices, shopping centers, residential and warehouse premises. The research results are published in the Journal of Engineering Physics and Thermophysics and Fire Safety Journal.
Modern fire detectors are triggered when combustion is already actively spreading in the room. A more modern approach, according to experts, is the detection of fire before the appearance of a flame, which is possible due to the analysis of the gas composition of the air.

Tomsk Polytechnic University scientists are developing a new method for detecting fires by air composition, which is based on neural network processing of data from various sensors. According to scientists, the proposed approach will significantly reduce the response time to fires and increase the efficiency of fire extinguishing systems.

The team of Tomsk Polytechnic University specialists conducted more than 800 experiments on a special installation, analyzing the entire combustion process of wood, PVC — panels, linoleum and other combustible building and finishing materials.
«»Pyrolysis and combustion of any material is characterized by certain concentrations of gaseous products. We determined the concentrations of the components of the gas mixture of materials at temperatures corresponding to their ignition, average combustion temperature and typical ignition temperature,» said Svetlana Kropotova, an assistant at the Research School of Physics of High-Energy Processes at Tomsk Polytechnic University.< br />According to the researchers, the concentration of gases can determine the type of fire and the predominant material in it. Understanding these parameters allows you to determine the optimal extinguishing strategy. -crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»338″ data-source-sid=»not_rian_photo» class=»» />

«As part of the project, we are studying the effectiveness of different fire extinguishing fluids and different modes of their use — for example, which additives should be used to more effectively suppress the combustion of a particular material,» – explained Alena Zhdanova, Associate Professor of the Research School of Physics of High-Energy Processes at Tomsk Polytechnic University.

As the scientists emphasized, the right choice of an effective extinguishing method minimizes toxic emissions during combustion, which will help make the evacuation of people safer.
Special software developed at the university can be used to prevent fire from turning into a fire in offices, warehouses, shopping centers and residential areas with a small area, the scientists explained. .ru/20220214/kuzgtu-1772321860.html» data->
The research team intends to prepare a new system for testing scheduled for the summer of 2023.
The study is supported by a grant Russian Science Foundation, project No. 21-19-00009. Tomsk Polytechnic University is a participant in the Priority 2030 program of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
