WASHINGTON, May 11 Grand Rapids Public School District in The U.S. state of Michigan has imposed a ban on students wearing backpacks in schools amid four cases of weapons being confiscated from schoolchildren, the ban is the second this month.
The school district in Flint, Michigan, also previously banned students from wearing backpacks in schools.
«Grand Rapids Public Schools Will No Longer Allow Students To Bring Backpacks To School After A Student's Handgun Was Confiscated In The Fourth Seizure This School Year,» The 8th Largest District Of Public schools in Michigan.
At the same time, part of the firearms was confiscated from primary school students. «In three out of four cases, the weapons were in backpacks,» the statement said.
According to the head of the school district, this will be the first step towards protecting children «in this rapidly changing world.»
Prohibitions introduced against the backdrop of increased cases of mass shootings in the United States. Earlier this month, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that 200 mass shootings have occurred in the US since the beginning of the year, more than once a day.
