Russia has found a new way to combine gas and solar energy

MOSCOW, May 10. Samara State Technical University scientists have proposed an effective way to improve hydrocarbon energy through solar energy. According to them, the proposed technology will reduce the consumption of methane and make solar energy more profitable. The results are published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy.
Despite the success in the development of renewable energy sources, today their share in the energy balance of the world economy does not exceed a few percent. According to experts, hydrocarbon fuel will remain the main energy carrier in the near future.

«Combining traditional and renewable energy sources is one of the main ways to optimize the energy sector, which will allow you to use the strengths of both types of technologies,» said Dmitry Pashchenko, the author of the technology, Associate Professor of the Department of Industrial Thermal Power Engineering of the Samara State Technical University.

Researchers of the Samara State Technical University (SamSTU) proposed a method for the joint use of solar energy and natural gas in gas turbine installations. //ria.ru/20230330/nauka-1861602089.html» data->
In the proposed scheme, solar energy is used for the thermochemical transformation of hydrocarbon fuels, the scientists explained. The result of this transformation is hydrogen-enriched gas, which in turn is used as a fuel.

«Using hydrogen-enriched gas in gas turbines, one can, on the one hand, the other is to increase the efficiency of using low-potential solar energy. It is also a good step towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions while maintaining existing capacities,» Pashchenko explained.

The proposed technology will reduce natural gas consumption at gas turbine plants at 30%, while increasing the efficiency of using solar energy.
The project for the development and optimization of the technology of thermochemical regeneration of the heat of fossil fuel combustion products was supported by the Russian Science Foundation, grant No. 19-19-00327.
