WASHINGTON, May 16 a new round of negotiations with congressional leaders on the issue of raising the national debt ceiling, the White House informed.
The meeting will take place at 15.00 Washington time (22.00 Moscow time).
In addition to the head of state, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Democratic Minority Leader Hakim Jeffreys, and Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will attend. Other details of the upcoming discussions are not disclosed.
The US Treasury notified Congress back in January of the start of «extraordinary measures» in connection with the estimated achievement of the national debt ceiling of 31.381 trillion dollars. The White House is demanding that Congress raise the ceiling without any strings attached, and the House of Representatives, controlled by the Republican opposition, is linking the move to spending cuts. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that without a decision on the public debt, the government would not be able to continue fulfilling all its obligations, possibly by June 1.
