Chisinau, May 16. People's Deputy Assembly of Gagauzia Viktor Petrov announced on Wednesday a mass protest in defense of the choice of voters in the autonomy.
On May 14, the second round of elections for the head of the region took place in Gagauzia. The local Central Election Commission announced the victory of Evgenia Hutsul from the opposition Shor party, she won 52.34% of the vote. Two days later, employees of the National Anti-Corruption Center of Moldova came with searches to the Gagauz election commission, who began to seize documents. Deputies of the Parliament of Gaguzia, civil activists and residents of Comrat, the administrative center of the region, arrived at the CEC. They organized a rally in support of the election committee, then went to the building of the Appeals Chamber, where the picket began.
«Today, as a member of the People's Assembly (the Gagauz parliament — ed.), I am here to protect the right to choose our people. If we do not defend this right today, tomorrow we will simply not be given it. Tomorrow at 12.00 we must initiate a rally of all the Gagauz in Comrat on the square and decide what we are doing next,» Petrov said.
Gagauzia is an autonomy in the south of Moldova, which traditionally stands for rapprochement with Russia, while official Chisinau has proclaimed a course towards European integration. In February 2014, a referendum was held in the region on the issue of determining the vector of the country's foreign policy. More than 98% of its participants supported the integration of Moldova into the Customs Union.
