
MOSCOW, May 17. As a result of forest fires in the Kurgan region, 12 people died, said the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation Alexander Kurenkov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding a meeting with members of the Russian government via videoconference on Wednesday.
«Only in the Kurgan region, 612 residential buildings were destroyed by fire, in which 2,741 people lived. 19 people were injured, 12 people died,» the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said at a meeting.
Kurenkov added that more than 2,000 people have been evacuated, 122 of them are in temporary accommodation centers, the rest live with relatives.
In the Kurgan region, on May 7, due to forest fires, an emergency mode was introduced, on May 12, the situation with wildfires in the region stabilized, and on May 16, the emergency mode was canceled. As reported by the SUSK RF, as a result of fires, at least three people died, significant material damage was caused to citizens and economic entities. A criminal case has been initiated under part 2 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (negligence).
