In Finland, 1109 Russian citizens applied for asylum, fearing being drafted into the army. The Migration Service told Yle that the authorities cannot give them refugee status without the EU's position on this issue.
Director of the Finnish Migration Service Sanna Sutter said that the authorities of other Nordic countries are also waiting for the position of the European Union on the issue of granting asylum to men of military age from Russia. When the EU will develop a roadmap for it is still unknown.
At the end of January, the Finnish authorities reported that the country had suspended the consideration of asylum applications for Russians who fled from mobilization. At the same time, a case is known when a Russian citizen who opposes the war in Ukraine and does not want to serve in the army received refugee status in Latvia.
