MINSK, May 20. Belarus has created a new kamikaze drone R-50, which may be of interest to the Russian army, due to the extensive use of loitering ammunition in the NMD, said a leading Russian expert in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles. Aviation Denis Fedutinov.
The development was first presented at the international arms exhibition MILEX-2023 (Minsk).
The Scientific and Practical Center for Multifunctional Unmanned Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus during the MILEX-2023 exhibition for the first time demonstrated its new R-50 unmanned aerial vehicle, which can perform the functions of loitering ammunition. Such drones have definitely become one of the trends in the development of unmanned aerial systems. Their high demand in the course of a dynamic modern battle was clearly demonstrated by the SVO,» said Fedutinov, who visited the Minsk weapons salon.
The expert noted that the active use of kamikaze drones at the front makes it necessary to ensure their uninterrupted supply to the troops in significant volumes.
«The R-50s may be of interest to the Russian army and, given the importance of using kamikaze drones in the NMD, these drones can be purchased by the Russian Federation and supplement the Kub and Lancet loitering ammunition in the arsenals of the Russian military,» the agency's interlocutor emphasized.
According to the data presented at the institute's stand, the light kamikaze drone R-50 is built on the basis of an aircraft-type device with a V-tail. A turbojet engine is used as a power plant. The launch of the UAV is carried out using a pneumatic catapult. The device can remain in the air for up to 25 minutes. The cruising speed of the UAV reaches 220 kilometers per hour, and the range is 90 kilometers. The warhead of the drone is 5 kilograms. The possibility of using the R-50 as an aerial target is also expected.
