MOSCOW, May 18.Russian developers have come up with a technology to improve the accuracy of docking spacecraft with orbital stations, it should reduce the risks of switching to manual mode when the ship berths to the station, the press service of the Russian Space Systems (RCS) reported on Thursday.
«Specialists of JSC «Research Institute of Precision Instruments» (NII TP, part of the holding company «Russian Space Systems» of the state corporation «Roscosmos») have developed a new method for improving the accuracy and reliability of measurements during docking of spacecraft. The technology is aimed at eliminating those most situations when the automation of the spacecraft refuses to «catch» the station and the astronauts have to switch to manual control.
It is noted that during the operation of the Kurs system, which is currently being installed on Russian ships, signals are strongly re-reflected from elements of various structures. The International Space Station consists of various modules, batteries, trusses and other structures, so the parameters measured during docking are often distorted, which can lead to loss of «docking» contact between the spacecraft and the station.
As Sergey Medvedev, chief designer of radio engineering systems of mutual measurements at the NII TP, explained, the words of which are given in the release, the new method involves the formation of a matrix model of space-time signals that are reflected from the station.
