Russia and China agree on a new contract for the supply of coal

MOSCOW, May 24. Russia and China are negotiating a new coal supply contract, Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov told reporters on the sidelines of the Eurasian Economic Forum.
“We have not yet signed an agreement with China, it is being negotiated. And there is an agreement with India on coal supplies,” the minister said in response to a question about coal supplies to China and India.
In October 2021, a memorandum was signed with India on the supply of 40 million tons per year of coking coal until 2030. Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Sergey Mochalnikov said in February 2022 that an intergovernmental agreement with China was being developed on the supply of coal to the republic in the amount of 100 million tons per year.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a Russian-Chinese business forum on May 23 that cooperation with China in the energy sector remains an «unconditional priority» for the Russian Federation, and the volume of exports of natural and liquefied gas, coal «is steadily are growing.»

In 2022, Russia increased coal supplies to China by 11.2% — up to 59.52 million tons, to India — almost 2.5 times, to 16.7 million tons.
