BRUSSELS, May 24 The European Commission, in its recommendations for the European Spring Semester, called on the EU countries to continue to reduce dependence on Russia's fossil energy resources, the European Commissioner for Economics Paolo Gentilloni.
«We encourage countries to continue to reduce their dependence on Russian fossil fuels,» he said.
«The situation in the European economy is better than expected a few months ago, we can be satisfied with the decisions that were taken to level the situation … At the same time, we continue to face a number of challenges, including financial conditions, still high inflation, geopolitical fragmentation, high public debt «, he added.
The recommendations issued by the EC, in particular, indicate that «despite the achievements in the field of energy security in recent months, preparations for next winter leave no room for complacency.»
The EC notes that «the potential complete cessation of Russian gas supplies, accidents, droughts … may create problems with the security of supplies to the EU.» To this end, the Commission proposes to implement new projects at the union level to increase capacities for importing LNG, as well as continue to diversify supply sources through LNG, carry out joint purchases, and look for alternative suppliers.
