MOSCOW, May 24. The Day of Slavic Literature and Culture is celebrated in Russia on May 24th. By this day, Vyatka State University specialists have completed the preparation of the «Network Electronic Dictionary of Vyatka Dialects». The development will also be a gift from the university to the residents of the region on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the city of Kirov, the press service of the university reported. in 2013.
“Without dialects, the language loses something important, dries up, becomes impoverished. Understanding this prompted us to create an educational dictionary. The small circulation of the publication and its demand in the educational institutions of the region prompted the compilers to create its electronic version. To do this, philologists have joined forces with VyatSU web developers and employees of the Research Archaeological Laboratory (NIAL) of the university, who have accumulated significant experience in presenting research results in the format of geographic information systems.
The result of the work carried out was a website, which presents a map with examples of the specifics of the Vyatka dialects in the districts of the Kirov region. The key block of information is dialect words. You can get acquainted with them in different ways: by finding out the meaning using a search engine, choosing from the thematic categories of interest, or starting from the geography of use — one or more areas. There are several options for working with the service — they can be combined, turning the study of dialects into an exciting experience.

According to the creators, the ability to search for any common word and get a list of dialect variants with a possible view of the geography of their use is of particular value to users.
For example, entering the word «talkative» into the search string gives options such as «baharnik», «flaky», «important», «verbal», «talkative». Corresponding marks also appear on the map, and the user sees the inhabitants of which settlements use these dialect words. At the same time, all viewed variants can be saved in a personal dictionary and referred to as needed.
Now the «Network Electronic Dictionary of Vyatka Dialects» includes almost three thousand words. In the future, their number will be increased, the database will expand, said Roman Markov, a web developer, associate professor of the Department of Fundamental Mathematics of Vyatka State University.
The creators of the dictionary believe that its significance cannot be overestimated, because dialects are the most important part of folk culture, conveying the content and characteristics of the lives of many people and generations. Acquaintance with dialects helps people to better understand the uniqueness of Russian traditions and values, to get closer to deciphering the cultural code of a Russian. In addition, working with a unique card can become a kind of pleasant and useful family leisure.
Interdisciplinary in the future The Vyatka State University team intends to present in a similar format a 12-volume dictionary of Vyatka dialects — the fruit of many years of scientific research by university philologists. monuments of the cultural heritage of the region, which is currently underway. We understand that it will be convenient for users to receive maximum information related to various aspects of studying the cultural code of a Russian from one source, «said Alexei Kaisin, head of the NIAL VyatSU.
