The City Duma of Krasnodar banned entrepreneurs from using signs in foreign languages. This was reported on the website of the city administration.
As the chief architect of Krasnodar Artem Salamatin previously reported, businessmen will be allowed to change them gradually: in the historical part of the city and main streets until March, and in all other areas — until September next year. The deputies made an exception for signs with the names of registered trademarks.
In February, the mayor of Krasnodar, Evgeny Naumov, during a tour of the city, shared his opinion that there are a lot of signboards in foreign languages at the establishments. He said that it was «unpatriotic» and asked his assistants to «work out this issue», because «in London, Washington, probably, there are no 90% of signs in Russian.»
In October 2020, the head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, criticized advertising signs in Latin and instructed the administration of Makhachkala to “clean up” outdoor advertising by the end of November.
“If it’s a cafe, then necessarily "San Francisco", "Los Angeles", "Havana". There are no other letters, except for Latin ones? When all the evil comes from there — and we position them. Let the names correspond to the place where we live. Let it be Derbent Lights, Dagestan Dawn,» he said.
After that, the sporting goods store New Balance reported that on the night of October 27, 2020, “on the instructions of the administration staff” of Makhachkala, vandals damaged their advertisements and signs.
