Erdogan appoints new cabinet of ministers

MOSCOW, 3 Jun. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who took office, formed a new cabinet of ministers:

  • Hakan Fidan took over as Foreign Minister. Previously, he headed the National Intelligence Organization;
  • Mehmet Simsek, who previously held the position of Deputy Prime Minister, headed the Ministry of Finance;
  • Minister defense became Yasar Güler, who was previously the chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces;
  • ex-governor of Istanbul province Ali Yerlikaya will lead the Ministry of Internal Affairs;
  • Alparslan Bayraktar was appointed Head of the Ministry of Energy.

In addition, Cevdet Yilmaz took the post of Vice President of Turkey. Previously, he headed the parliamentary budget committee.

Head of the Ministry of Health Fahrettin Koca and Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy retained their posts.

Last Sunday, the second round of presidential elections was held in Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the single Republican Alliance candidate led by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti), won more than 52 percent of the vote. His rival was the representative of the opposition «People's Alliance» Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who was supported by 47.82 percent of the population.
Today, Erdogan officially took office as President of Turkey.
