ATHENS, Jun 11 Hundreds of people took part in celebrations on the eve of the Day of Russia on the central Freedom Square in Nicosia, the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of Cyprus reported.
The event was co-organized by Cypriot NGOs: the Society for Friendship and Cultural Ties «Cyprus — Russia», the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities, and the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of the Republic of Cyprus.

“The path of European integration chosen by Cyprus should not put an end to the centuries-old friendship of our peoples. We declare our support for Russia! Cypriots do not abandon their friends!” — Prominent public figures of Cyprus said.
The event was officially allowed by the Cypriot authorities, despite an open appeal to the President of Cyprus from the Ukrainian diaspora to ban actions in support of Russia. The security of the event was provided by the Cypriot police at the highest level, the Coordinating Council noted.
