Maria Mironova: «The future of our cinema is in comedies and children's films»

MOSCOW, 4 Jun. She doesn't consider herself an elite. The People's Artist is sure that such definitions artificially divide society. Maria Mironova spoke about this, as well as about the new unusual performance and the problems of modern cinema, in an exclusive interview.

Woman: women should go to the theater to get answers

— You are planning to premiere a production based on Irada Berg's play «Isolation» this fall. The project is non-standard. What is its specialty?

The performance is called Woman. I love the drama of Berg, but now is the time when kind irony has become important for people. We won't burden the viewer, but we'll talk about a topic that is important for all women.
As a producer, I conceived this project as a kind of synthesis of humor, irony and psychology, which is so popular today.

— Performance for a female audience. Is it about feminism, a Russian woman, or something else?

— I don't like generalizations. Life is varied, like Fellini. This is generally about a woman: why she does it this way and not otherwise. And, perhaps, the performance will give answers to some questions.
What happens to the characters on the stage will be commented on by psychologists. I hope this will benefit women: let them understand what is happening to them — without the lectures of popular coaches, but with the help of theatrical art.

Modern literature: are there any talented authors in Russia

Why are you interested in the work of Irada Berg?

— I met Irada by chance at the premiere of the film. And I asked her to send texts to spend evenings where you can just read good literature and chat with guests.
We have developed a strong friendship. Moreover, I can even change her lyrics. Here is such a rare union of an actor and a writer. crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»400″ data-source-sid=»rian_photo» class=»lazyload» width=»1920″ height=»1280″ decoding=»async» />

—Modern literature is criticized a lot: there are no good books, plays, scripts. How do you feel about this?

— Yes, there is such a problem. As far as cinema is concerned, it is an industry. A literary work can be anything beautiful, a script is a completely different field, a different profession.

Tem nevertheless, it seems to me that interesting texts have begun to appear in the last seven or eight years. But for growth to continue, there must be fewer restrictions. This is not good for the industry.
Stage dramaturgy is a separate complex task. There is, for example, Alexander Tsypkin, he can write for the theater. The play should keep the reader not only from the point of view of the plot, but also from the human, emotional side — and this is already done by the actors and directors. » media-type=»photo» data-crop-ratio=»0.665142857142857″ data-crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»399″ data-source-sid=»rian_photo» class=»lazyload» width =»1920″ height=»1277″ decoding=»async» />

— Minister Olga Lyubimova very often says that her department is ready to allocate grants for children's films, but, unfortunately, there are simply no good scripts in Russia …

— For some period it was unpopular . But I am sure that today the situation will change. It's just that the industry didn't have time to reorganize itself.
Now is the time for such films as «An Ordinary Miracle» by Mark Zakharov. Parable films, including comedies and children's films. The future belongs to these genres.

— It is indicated on the Internet that you celebrated your anniversary this year. But no, it's in 2024. Nevertheless: do you sum up any results on your personal holiday?

Yes, the press got the date wrong. Apparently, no one will congratulate me on my anniversary next year (laughs). No, just not the results. I do this way too often. I don't have any definite trajectory for years to come. It's just that every birthday a new path begins.

About stability and the elite: what does Mironova think

Do you want stability? Put on slippers, cook borscht, lie down and watch TV shows?
— Once upon a time I wanted to. But that's not my karma (laughs).

— Recently, Konstantin Bogomolov wrote an article «Dietary grief» about the elite. Do you consider yourself to be part of this part of society?

— No, and never did.
— Who is the elite then?
— It's kind of a contrived definition. The real elite is made up of historical things. It is only years later that one can say who was the elite.
Dividing society into categories is arrogance. For me, there are people who think and those who do not think, who, due to circumstances, do not want to think. But I don't judge them.

— You became a people's artist in 2020. What does this rank give you?

— Ranks lead us to the fact, again, that society is divided into the elite and others. I don't like that. At the same time, I do not want to say that I am above all regalia — God forbid! The title is nice in terms of audience recognition. But I don't make a fetish out of it. There are many talented people without titles and vice versa.

— In the regions they say that after the start of the SVO, people began to go to the theater more often, and not to concerts of pop stars. How do you feel about this?
— Of course, the theater is a more «thinking» art form. Everyone has periods — upheavals or just events — when the soul requires analysis.
Actually, the same thing with literature. And today they read very little.
The culture of mass media has occupied so much space that there is very little time left for books. And reading is development.
— How to solve this problem?
— Audiobooks. There should be more of them. This is a live format, if only to revive the love of reading.
