Ancient Roman mausoleum unearthed near London market

MOSCOW, June 14. An ancient Roman mausoleum has been unearthed in Southwark, south London, writes The Guardian. Not far from the place of discovery — Borough market and London Bridge station.
The coffins were not found in the tomb. But there are 80 graves around it.
Archaeologists have called the mausoleum the best preserved of all such structures of the ancient Roman era found in Britain. There are floors and walls. In the center is a mosaic surrounded by a raised platform where the burials were located. Under it, traces of another mosaic have been preserved. The drawings are similar — they depict a flower circled in several circles.

Probably, already in the Middle Ages, the building was almost completely dismantled. There is reason to believe that it was of impressive size. The building consisted of two floors. Archaeologists have suggested that it belonged to wealthy Romans and served as a family tomb.

Earlier it was reported that scientists scanned a mysterious ancient Roman burial.
