St. PETERSBURG, June 17 Spending by Russians on vacations abroad decreased by $23 billion from 2019 to 2021, while similar spending in Russia increased by the same amount, Vice President said in an interview at SPIEF Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko.
“If in 2019 our citizens spent $35 billion on tourism abroad, then in 2021 this figure amounted to $11.4 billion. Similar expenses in Russia over the same two years increased by more than $23 billion up to $94 billion,» Chernyshenko said.
“These 23 billion I would call an organic growth in flow. This is not an increase in some kind of demand. This is just the money of those tourists who did not go abroad, but went on trips around Russia. But this is a rather narrow segment of the population — 7%. — make sure that this demand increases,» he added.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that for this it is necessary, first of all, to create infrastructure. «And we are doing this within the framework of the national project: financing in the accompanying infrastructure for tourist places and subsidizing interest rates so that the investor can build a hotel, and then everything else — routes, tourist codes of cities,» Chernyshenko said.
Then the Deputy Prime Minister noted that the tourist flow in Russia has already begun to grow and approach pre-pandemic indicators. «The situation is already improving: in the first quarter, the occupancy of hotels in Russia increased by 14%, and the tourist flow — by 17%. This is despite the fact that the southern airports are closed,» he said.
