St. Petersburg, June 18In November 2023, Myanmar and the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) will hold the first meeting of the working group founded by the memorandum dated June 15, Sergei Glazyev, Minister for Integration and Macroeconomics of the EEC, said in an interview at SPIEF 2023.
On Thursday, June 15, on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, where the latter expressed its intention to join the negotiation process to ease any barriers that exist in trade between members of the EAEU and Myanmar .
«We agreed to create a joint working group that will develop a plan for joint activities of the government of Myanmar and the Eurasian Economic Commission by autumn, and in November, in Moscow, we we will have to hold the first meeting of this working group,» Glazyev said on the sidelines of the forum in St. Petersburg.
He added that the initiative to sign the memorandum came from the Myanmar side. According to Glazyev, despite the rapid development of relations with Myanmar, it is too early to talk about signing a free trade agreement.
«This is a different process, more complex than just a memorandum of cooperation, since the issue of the trade regime is under the joint responsibility of the Eurasian Commission and the member states of the EAEU. In order for this to become possible, a consensus is needed … The end result (the meeting working group — ed.) can lead to the creation of a preferential regime, but this requires special political decisions and other procedures,» the EEC Minister explained.
