MOSCOW, June 17Scientists from the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology University have developed a method for creating drugs based on biopolymer aerogels, with its help it will be possible to calculate how best to make a drug spray for its accurate delivery to the respiratory system of a particular person, the press service of the university reported.
“Scientists of the D.I. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology have developed an integrated approach to create drugs and precise systems for their delivery based on biopolymer aerogels. The results obtained will become the basis for the development of fundamentally new nasal drug delivery systems, and the use of modern methods and materials will ensure high bioavailability of pharmaceutical substances and given pharmacokinetics,» the report says.
It is noted that other scientific and medical organizations participated in the work of the consortium of scientists in addition to the Russian Chemical Technical University. At the moment, scientists have received pharmaceutical compositions with various drugs (clomipramine, melatonin, delta sleep peptide and tryptophan). It is planned to expand the range, including the creation of compositions with antiviral and oncological drugs, as well as antibiotics.

As explained by the head of the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering of the Russian Chemical Technical University Natalya Menshutina, quoted by the press service, biopolymer aerogels are an effective transport of drugs to the olfactory region of the nasal cavity, provide a long retention time on the surface of the nasal mucosa, rapid release and delivery to the cerebral cortex .

“Creation of dry sprays makes it possible to implement targeted delivery, reduce the therapeutic dose, and, as a result, reduce the toxic effect. In addition, the developed biopolymer aerogels are promising carrier matrices for a wide range of active pharmaceutical ingredients,” she said.
In the framework of the same study, an information system for selecting the composition of a drug was developed, which can be used to create new drugs. With its help, it is possible to obtain compositions with targeted properties, which gives scientists the opportunity to reduce the amount of experimental research required and reduce the time and cost of developing new compositions.

In addition, the scientists developed a multi-scale model of nasal spray spraying and deposition of particles, followed by diffusion of the drug in the nasal cavity. This approach can be used to select the parameters of spraying into the nasal cavity of solid and liquid drugs. It allows you to identify in advance the most suitable types of dosing spray devices, the press service of the university specified.

«In the future, on the basis of the developed multiscale model, a full-fledged model of the human respiratory system can be built to simulate the spraying of both nasal and inhalation forms to predict the places of particle deposition and reverse engineering — optimization of particle sizes and properties for the most efficient targeted delivery,» added Menshutina.
RCTU scientists believe that the resulting model can also be combined with others that already exist. For example, combining with a stroke model developed at the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University will make it possible to predict the required doses and intervals for administering drugs in the treatment of stroke.
