MOSCOW, June 26 By replacing your home Wi-Fi router, you can use the old device to expand the capabilities of the new one, says telecommunications expert Vyacheslav Burkhaylo. In an interview with Sputnik radio, he gave advice on how to do this.
There is no need to get rid of the old Wi-Fi router after buying a more modern device. An additional router improves the functioning of the home network, Burhailo said. According to him, it is advisable to use a router that has served its age as a repeater or switch. That is, it can be used to either strengthen the Wi-Fi signal, or connect more devices to the main router, Burhailo specified.

«In the first case, the old router is connected to the new wire and broadcasts Wi-Fi Fi signal. You can use both the network of the new router and the network of the old one. In the second case, the old router is also connected to the new one, after which you can use the ports of the old one to connect the equipment,” he explained.
Most default routers can serve as switches, the expert continued.
«To use the old router as a switch, you just need to connect the wires correctly. From the LAN port of the main router, the cable must come to the WAN port of the old router. Usually this port (WAN) is highlighted in color and is located separately from the LAN ports. It is signed like this: WAN or Internet, «Burhailo recalled.
Not every router supports the repeater function. To find out whether it is your device that can be used as a signal amplifier, you need to study its characteristics either in the web interface or on the manufacturer's website, the expert recommends.
«To connect the router as a repeater, you need to go to its web interface. All the information is available on the Internet, and a more or less active user will be able to find instructions and cope on their own,» he believes.
In case of difficulties with connection, it is better to turn to specialists, added Burhaylo.
The expert also named the disadvantages of using old Wi-Fi routers. Firstly, such devices may not be sufficiently reliable in terms of security, he noted. Burhailo warned.
Second, the speed of information transfer through a switch made from an old router can be slow, he concluded.
