DERBENT, June 28 Western sanctions had virtually no effect on the economy of Dagestan, said the head of the region, Sergei Melikov, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the meeting, the head of state asked about the situation in the republic's economic sector.
«»I believe that in general, Dagestan, perhaps, was more fortunate than other subjects, because Dagestan today does not experience such an impact of external sanctions. And those areas of economic development that we have, they can develop thanks to our internal potential» — said Melikov.
He noted that the only problem in the region is undeveloped infrastructure. «And if we continue to work on its creation, then we will have a meat processing enterprise,» Melikov said.
As a good example of the development of the region's economy, the head of Dagestan cited the sphere of winemaking. He said that drinks produced in the republic are able to compete with Western products. «And in order not to be dependent on them, today we started work on breeding and creating nurseries in Dagestan,» he said.
«Will it be possible to verify what you say?» Putin asked and added that he was joking. The head of Dagestan nevertheless replied that such an opportunity would appear in the near future.
