PARIS, June 30 UNESCO member countries have decided to restore US membership in the organization, follows from the communiqué.
Resolution on the return of the country to UNESCO adopted on Friday: 132 countries voted in favor, 15 abstained, and six other states voted against, including Russia, Iran, Syria and China.
In early June, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay announced that Washington had notified the renewal of membership from July. The US decided to do so almost six years after it left the organization during the presidency of Donald Trump.
At the beginning of the year, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke about his intention to return to UNESCO. According to him, many countries reproached Washington for not taking such organizations seriously. After the restoration of membership, the United States intends to pay dues on time.
The Foreign Ministry noted that Moscow welcomes the return of the United States to UNESCO, but it should not violate the charter of the organization, so Washington needs to fully repay a huge debt of 612 million dollars. The department said that Washington's decision to return has an open political motivation.
According to the director of the Institute for Strategic Assessments, deputy chairman of the Russia-US Association, Sergey Oznobishchev, after the return of the United States to UNESCO, the number of politicized decisions will certainly increase, since the contradictions between the West and Russia will be projected onto the sphere of culture and art.
