MONTEVIDEO, Jul 1 The last letter that the Uruguayan passenger of the Titanic, Ramon Artagaveitia Gomez, sent to his family a few days before the sinking of the liner in 1912 , went under the hammer for 12 thousand dollars at an auction in Montevideo, said a representative of the auction house Zorrilla.

«[The letter] was sold at auction for $12,000,» a spokesman for the auction house said.
The three-page handwritten letter was put up for auction along with a photograph of a Uruguayan taken in 1909. The letter was sent on April 12 from Ireland, from the last stop of the liner before it entered the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The British steamer Titanic, considered the largest passenger ship in the world, collided with an iceberg on April 14, 1912 during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York and sank two hours and 40 minutes later. About 1.5 thousand people died. The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in September 1985 about 350 nautical miles off the coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland at a depth of about four kilometers.
