The Prosecutor General's Office has declared The Altai Project, a project aimed at protecting wildlife and supporting the indigenous peoples of Eurasia, an «undesirable organization». This is stated in the release of the department.
According to the prosecutor's office, «the key direction of the organization's work is sabotaging the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline.» As noted in the department, the project participants are raising money for environmental assessments, «which will prove the allegedly detrimental impact of the gas pipeline,» and also calling for protests.
The release also notes that The Altai Project opposes the development of the Kara-Kul field, arguing that it will have negative consequences for the region's ecology. At the same time, the prosecutor's office insists, the development of the deposit, from the point of view of the authorities, will increase the economic potential of Altai.
“In this connection, The Altai Project causes economic damage to the Russian Federation, acts in the interests of foreign enterprises, and deliberately tries to limit the competitiveness of Russian companies,” the release says. – Formally speaking for the protection of nature, it interferes in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation, can damage the security of Russia in the economic sphere.
The Altai Project appeared in the late 1990s. The organization's website states that its mission is to protect wildlife, support indigenous peoples and their cultural heritage, and strengthen the communities of Eurasia. The project is led by US citizen Jennifer Kastner.
