MOSCOW, July 12 In Israel, a Roman mosaic was discovered in the Lower Galilee region, according to the website of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The find was made during excavations at a 1600-year-old synagogue in Hukok.
The panel is located on the floor near the main entrance. In the center of the mosaic is an inscription in Hebrew, around which there is a wreath. Nearby are records in Aramaic, which list the names of donors or artists. On both sides of the wreath there are drawings of lions resting their paws on the heads of bulls. The panel is framed by a border depicting predators chasing other animals.
Also, archaeologists stumbled upon another fragment of mosaics discovered in 2013 and 2012. They depict episodes 15:4 and 16:3 from the Book of Judges of Israel, which are about Samson. Among the newly found fragments are images of a Philistine horseman and a dead soldier.
It was previously reported that a mausoleum from the time of the ancient Romans was unearthed near Borough Market in south London.
