MOSCOW, July 11SSU scientists have proposed a method for accurate and rapid control of the concentration in body tissues of one of the most important drugs for cancer chemotherapy. According to them, the development, focused on the needs of Russian medicine, will make therapy safer, more affordable and less expensive. The results are published in the journal Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects.
The rapid determination of the concentration of drugs in the body is extremely important in clinical practice at all stages of treatment, the scientists said. This is necessary to maintain the required therapeutic dose, as well as to assess the distribution of the drug in tissues.
Today, to solve this problem, methods are used that require serious preliminary preparation of samples and extremely expensive equipment. Such methods are not suitable for mass use, which greatly complicates the timely provision of assistance.
Scientists of the Saratov National Research State University named after N.G. Chernyshevsky (SSU) created a method for rapid and accurate assessment of the concentration of mitoxantrone, a drug widely used for chemotherapy of a wide range of oncological diseases. which is comparable to the most common analogues today. The method of SSU scientists, according to them, is focused on domestic equipment, which can be used by an employee of the basic laboratories of medical institutions.
“Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals of complex composition, the emission color of which is regulated with great accuracy. We have shown that our quantum dots change the brightness of the glow upon contact with mitoxantrone, and the intensity of the change depends on the concentration of the drug,” said Ekaterina, a researcher at the Institute of Chemistry at SSU Mordovin.

The proposed approach, according to the creators, will be more effective in a constant «stream» of analyzes than existing analogues. As the creators noted, the application of the development will reduce the cost of therapy tenfold.
«The development of a simple method for the determination of mitoxantrone is especially relevant today, since existing approaches are limited by a number of features of the drug molecule. Our method solves this problem, since we have proved that the luminescence of quantum dots depends only on the electrostatic interaction of the drug with their surface,» the researcher emphasized. SSU specialists used the method of high-temperature organic synthesis to create quantum dots. IN AND. Razumovsky. In the future, the team intends to test the obtained results in direct work with patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation under project No. 21-73-10046.
