Journalist Karen Shahinyan has been added to the «list of terrorists and extremists» maintained by Rosfinmonitoring. The telegram channel, which monitors changes in the register, drew attention to this.
The list of Rosfinmonitoring includes suspects and defendants under «extremist» and «terrorist» articles, their Russian accounts are blocked. People who are considered involved in terrorism have an asterisk in the register.
Shainyan does not have one — he is probably being persecuted under an extremist article. These include articles about calls to extremismand «incitement of hatred», which are filed for speaking on the Internet.
Shahinyan's criminal case was not previously known. He said that he also did not know about him before updating the register of Rosfinmonitoring. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has not yet been added to the federal wanted list. In April 2022, the Ministry of Justice entered the journalist into the register of «foreign agents». He was fined for the lack of labeling of publications indicating the status.
Together with journalist Mikhail Zygar, Karen Shainyan founded the History of the Future studio — she, among other things, did the project “1917. Free History”, which told about the revolutions of 1917 in the form of a feed from a social network.
Since 2020, the journalist has been running a YouTube channel with 200,000 subscribers, where he releases interviews with open gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. He also reports on the war in Ukraine.
