Bild reports that a thumbs up emoji cost 56,500 euros to a Canadian farmer. At the beginning of 2021, a Canadian company decided to buy 86 tons of flax and sent out a commercial offer to several farmers via WhatsApp. A resident of the town of Swift Current became interested in the offer, contacted the company and received an electronic contract through the messenger. He reacted to this message with an approving emoji.
According to the farmer, he just wanted to confirm receipt of the document. He did not sign the contract with the company with either a physical or electronic signature.
And by the fall, the deadline for the delivery of flax specified in the contract had expired. Of course, the company did not receive it. But, since the price of flax increased sharply, the company decided to file a lawsuit against the farmer.
In court, he failed to prove that he did not sign the contract and he was fined 56,500 euros — the amount of the rise in price of that quantity flax, which was specified in the contract.
A Canadian judge considered that a raised finger in this case is a form of signature.
