The Minister of Information and Press of Chechnya, Akhmed Dudayev, on the air of the Special Conversation program on local television, said that the practice of public apologies is traditional for the Chechen people and useful for young people. His words are quoted by the Grozny State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company.
“Someone reproaches us that the Chechens allegedly did not practice such [public apologies] before. But, as you know, it has always been customary with us: if a person committed a serious offense, their family gathered, a village gathered, usually in a mosque. And it was announced there that a representative of such and such a family had committed such and such an offense, ”Dudaev said.
The official added that the republic's leadership forces public apologies to those who «do not get enough information that this or that behavior goes beyond» Chechen traditions or customs. In his opinion, this practice «acts effectively in the edification of the younger generation.»
Chechen state television and local officials on their social networks regularly publish videos with apologies from the residents of the republic, in particular, for witchcraft, insulting Islamic values, and criticizing Ramzan Kadyrov. In 2021, Chechen Deputy Prime Minister Dzhambulat Umarov called it a «great practice» and suggested that it be extended throughout Russia.
