MOSCOW, July 20The timing of the restoration of the icon «Holy Trinity» by Andrei Rublev will be determined after a study of its condition, said Elena Pronicheva, general director of the Tretyakov Gallery.
«Before receiving the full results of the study of the «Holy Trinity» after it is in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, it is difficult to say how much time it will take and what specialists will be included in the team to work with this unique monument of ancient Russian art,» said Pronicheva, answering the question of how long it will take to restore the icon.
«Trinity» was transported from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to the Grabar restoration center on Wednesday. It has prepared a special room with climate control and air conditioning systems for storing the icon. Earlier, the head of the department for scientific and methodological work and exhibition activities of the Grabar Center, Elena Prokhanova, reported that the same storage conditions were provided in it: a temperature of 19 degrees, a humidity of 50%, in which the relic was in the Tretyakov Gallery.
Prokhanova also noted that at the end of July, an expanded restoration council will be held, at which experts will decide on further work with the icon. It will be attended by specialists from the Tretyakov Gallery, who have been involved in the preservation of the «Trinity» for many years.
Earlier, the Russian Orthodox Church reported that the «Trinity» was transferred to the gratuitous use of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra for 49 years, the corresponding agreement was concluded between the Tretyakov Gallery and the monastery, it was signed by the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Olga Lyubimova and Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Kirill.
The Holy Trinity icon was painted by Andrei Rublev in the 15th century for the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. After the revolution in 1929, «Trinity» was transferred to the State Tretyakov Gallery, where it was kept until recently. In May of this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the return of a masterpiece of ancient Russian icon painting to the Church. In early June, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' said that the «Trinity» would be exhibited in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, and then return to its historical place — the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. Until July 19, inclusive, the icon was available for veneration in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Then, as reported by the Ministry of Culture, it will be restored in the Grabar Center.
