The Oktyabrsky District Court of Irkutsk satisfied the claim of the prosecutor's office and invalidated the marriage due to the fact that one of the spouses filed an application to change the gender marker in the documents. This is reported by the registry office of the Irkutsk region.
When exactly the marriage was annulled is unknown. The head of the registry office of the Irkutsk region, Valery Mitusov, in the press center of the Regional newspaper, clarified that he was imprisoned in 2022, and the “new husband” wanted to change the gender marker in the documents. After that, Mitusov's colleagues turned to the prosecutor's office.
The registry office of the Irkutsk region reports that this court decision «was the first in the Russian Federation and created a precedent.» However, there is another similar decision made in March 2023 by the Tyumen court.
In mid-July, the State Duma adopted a bill banning transgender transition, soon it was approved by the Federation Council. It also provides for a ban on changing the gender marker in documents, and also gives the authorities the right to annul the marriages of citizens who have done this before. The law will come into force after its signing by Vladimir Putin.
