The customs officers managed to find the birds while examining the trunk of the car. In the spare wheel compartment of the car, they spotted two birds of prey wrapped in tape and cloth.
According to the ministry, referring to the words of the driver who transported the Red Book hawks, he was taking the birds to Abkhazia for himself, but did not draw up a declaration in order to save time. The man did not have the necessary documents for the export of hawks, so the birds were seized.
«The examination established that the birds are one-year-old goshawks, the trade of which is regulated by the CITES Convention. The court found the citizen guilty under Article 16.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (failure to declare goods) and under Article 16.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (non-compliance with prohibitions and restrictions). A decision was made to impose an administrative fine in the amount of 45,000 rubles,» the report says.
The customs said that the birds were confiscated, now they are in one of the sanatoriums in Sochi, the issue of placing them in the regional zoo is being worked out. As explained in the department, the man is a resident of Moscow.
