MOSCOW, 28 Jul. President Volodymyr Zelensky wants Western countries to intervene in Ukraine, ex-US intelligence officer Scott Ritter said in an interview with Dialogue works YouTube channel.
“He is desperate and wants foreign intervention. Therefore, he demands Ukraine's membership in NATO, but the alliance is not going to commit suicide for Ukraine,» the expert said.
According to him, Zelensky has already begun to understand that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will weaken every day, and the Russian army will step up strikes and increase pressure. Sooner or later, Kiev will lose its army, the former intelligence officer concluded.
The NATO countries at the summit in Lithuania approved a multi-year support package for Ukraine, consisting of three points: an assistance plan to achieve compatibility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with NATO standards, the creation of a Ukraine-NATO council and confirmation of her right to join the alliance without first completing the action plan to achieve membership. At the same time, no time frame for Ukraine's entry into the bloc, on which Kiev insisted, was indicated, as well as the conditions that must be met in order to receive an official invitation.
Zelensky, commenting on this decision, said that it was «unprecedented and absurd» because it does not define the terms of entry. According to him, this looks like a lack of readiness to make Ukraine part of NATO.
