The owner of Jacobs and L'Or decided to stop selling coffee under foreign brands in Russia

The Dutch coffee and tea producer JDE Peet's will stop selling goods under foreign brands in Russia by the end of the year, according to their report for the first half of the year (.pdf). Reuters drew attention to him.

JDE Peet's owns brands such as Jacobs, Tassimo, L'Or, Carte Noire and Douwe Egberts — in Russia they sold coffee under them, including soluble, ground and in capsules. A complete list of products available in Russia is available on the manufacturer's website (.pdf).

The Russian division of the company, Jacobs Dow Egberts Rus, has had a plant in the Leningrad Region since 2000, near Pulkovo Airport. It produced 35 thousand tons of coffee per year, including for export.

What types of coffee and under what Russian brands will be produced, the report does not say. In a message to investors, the half-year losses due to the “transition to a local portfolio of brands in Russia” were estimated at 185 million euros. Their shares after the release of the report fell by 1.9%.

After the start of the war in Ukraine, the company did not suspend work in Russia, as did, for example, Lavazza Group, which has no Russian production facilities. JDE Peet's CEO Fabien Simon, at a conference with investors for the release of the report, explained this by saying that their products are needed by people. He also suggested what the consequences of shutting down the plant could be: “We risk our assets and intellectual property being nationalized by the Russian state or transferred to third parties in Russia.”

President Vladimir Putin has already made such a decision in relation to the Baltika brewing company, owned by Carlsberg, the Russian division of Danone and two energy companies.
