Yesterday, Moscow City Court Judge Andrei Suvorov, reading out the verdict to Alexei Navalny in the «extremist case», released the politician from liability for four episodes due to the statute of limitations. A Mediazona correspondent, who read the audio recording from the court, drew attention to this.
The oppositionist was released from liability under the articles:
- on the rehabilitation of Nazism — Part 3 of Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code (punishment of one year in prison);
- involving minors for committing dangerous acts — points «a», «b» and «c» of part 2 of article 151.2 of the Criminal Code (punishment of two years in prison with a ban on using the Internet for three years);
- on the creation of an NPO that infringes on the rights of citizens — part 2 of article 239 of the Criminal Code (punishment of two years in prison);
- about incitement to extremism — Part 1 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code (punishment of three years in prison).
As a result, the court punished Navalny under articles on financing extremism (part 2 of article 282.3 of the Criminal Code), the creation of an extremist community (part 3 of article 282.1 of the Criminal Code) and incitement to extremism (part 2 of article 280 of the Criminal Code). Under the first two articles, the politician was sentenced in total to 15 years in prison and a year and a half of restriction of freedom with a fine of 500 thousand rubles and a ban on writing on the Internet for nine years, under the third — four years in prison with a ban on using the Internet for two years.
Taking into account previous sentences, the oppositionist was sentenced to 19 years in a special regime colony and a fine of 500,000 rubles. He was also sentenced to three years of restriction of freedom and banned from writing on the Internet for 10 years. In the verdict, Judge Suvorov said that Navalny would spend 19 years in a colony, taking into account the time already served. At the same time, the politician has been in custody since January 2021. Therefore, the court-appointed term should end at the end of the 2030s.
The former technical director of the Navalny LIVE YouTube channel, Daniel Kholodny, was sentenced to a total of eight years in a penal colony with a ban on writing on the Internet for four years. In particular, he was sentenced to four years in prison under the article on financing extremist activities (Part 2 of Article 282.3 of the Criminal Code) and six years in prison under the article on participation in the activities of an extremist organization (Part 2 of Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code).
Companions Navalny got acquainted with 196 volumes of the criminal case. According to FBK director Ivan Zhdanov, most of the materials are screenshots of publications in personal and work social networks of supporters of the oppositionist, screenshots of websites, as well as other pictures that are not related to politics. On one of the sheets from the case file, there was a screenshot of an empty browser page with the investigator's bookmarks: «Boiled omelet», «Vegetable dishes», «Sewing patterns for overweight». There are also photos of a notebook with blank sheets in the file.
