Poland has temporarily stopped pumping crude oil through a section of the Druzhba western oil pipeline, through which it goes to Germany. The decision was made following the discovery of a leak at the site, representatives of the Polish pipeline operator PERN said.
Supplies have been halted on one of two lines in the community of Chodecz. The second line continues to function. Emergency services are on the scene. It is noted that the situation does not pose a threat to local residents. The causes of the leak are being investigated.
Representatives of the operator PERN specified that the supply of Polish refineries was not affected, and local drivers will be provided with fuel.
Plans to resume oil transportation through this section of the pipeline are scheduled for Tuesday in the morning.
The Druzhba oil pipeline is one of the world's largest systems of main oil pipelines, through which Russian oil is supplied to the countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Since its commissioning in 1964, the length of this system is about 8900 km. Oil from Russia is delivered to the Belarusian city of Mozyr, where the pipeline diverges into two branches: the northern one, passing through the territories of Poland, Germany, Latvia and Lithuania, and the southern one, covering Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia.
