MOSCOW, August 5 Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko sued the Metropolitan Opera in New York and its general manager Peter Gelb and demanded to pay compensation in the amount of 360 thousand dollars for canceled performances, writes the Washington Post.
As the newspaper notes, the lawsuit was filed with the Southern District of New York on Friday.
«The lawsuit … contains accusations of discrimination based on nationality, breach of contract and slander. Netrebko demands compensation for damages in the amount of not less than $360,000, citing loss of performance and rehearsal fees,» the story read.
Netrebko's management told the newspaper that the Metropolitan Opera had used the opera singer «as a scapegoat in its campaign to distance itself from Russia and support Ukraine.»
According to the newspaper, the Metropolitan Opera released a statement alleging that Netrebko's claim «has no basis».
As the New York Times reported in March, a court ruled that the Metropolitan Opera in New York must pay Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko more than $200,000 in compensation for canceled performances in 2022.
In early March last The New York Metropolitan Opera announced that Netrebko would not take part in upcoming productions because she had not complied with a demand to withdraw her public support for Russian President Vladimir Putin amid events in Ukraine. For the same reason, the Bavarian State Opera broke off relations with her. After that, a representative of Netrebko said that the singer decided to take a break from concert activities. The artist later announced on social media that she would resume performing.
