MOSCOW, Aug. 7 Children's book illustrator Nikolai Ustinov has died at the age of 86, according to the telegram channel of the children's literature department of the AST publishing house.
“We are sad to announce that the wonderful artist Nikolai Alexandrovich Ustinov has passed away,” the message says.
Ustinov illustrated books for «Children's Literature», «Baby», «Artist of the RSFSR», publishing houses in Tula, Voronezh, St. Petersburg. He participated in the design of the encyclopedia «What is it. Who is it» and encyclopedias «Dorling Kindersley», and also worked in periodicals — the magazine «Murzilka» (since 1963), the newspaper «Zhili-byli», «Roman-gazeta» and others.
“An illustrator who created several hundred books in his entire life, both in Russia and in Germany, Japan, Italy, South Korea. He, like all his entourage, who was born in the 30s, was for me from an early age is an example of how you can live this life: in adventures, creativity, travel and such good hooliganism, mischievous, but in the right sense — intelligent, ”the words of his grandson Mikhail Forreiter are quoted.

Ustinov is a Russian graphic artist, illustrator of children's books, People's Artist of Russia, jury member of the Cherished Dream national award. He was born in Ryazan on July 10, 1937, graduated from the graphic department of the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after Surikov. Ustinov drew illustrations for the classics — Ivan Turgenev and Leo Tolstoy, stories by Mikhail Prishvin, Gennady Snegirev, Ivan Sokolov-Mikitov, Russian fairy tales, poems about nature by Fyodor Tyutchev and Afanasy Fet, Mikhail Lermontov and Nikolai Nekrasov, Apollo Maykov and Ivan Bunin, Alexander Blok and Sergei Yesenin.
