We all die. But this is not accurateHow to «bomb» the DNA of a cancer cell with radiation and prevent it from recovering?
12:00
Radiation therapy is actively used to fight cancer, but some tumor cells are resistant to radiation — how to solve this problem? We invited one of the authors of a new method to enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy to talk about what damage radiation does to DNA, how cells «repair» them, and how AraC prevents the tumor from doing this.
Which radiation «bombs DNA like cannonballs», and which one «looks like a burst from a machine gun.» What is flash therapy and why is it not a panacea. Vladimir Chausov, a radiobiologist and head of the JINR Laboratory of Radiation Biology Laboratory, told how the power and dose of radiation are related, and why the use of arabinosidecytosine together with methylene blue is cool. and how they are repaired, you can find out in the episode «How radiation affects DNA, and what molecular geneticists do.»
How sequencing works, what polymerase is, and how it helps to «read DNA» — we talked about in the episode «Survive Where Others Die: Who Are the Extremophiles».
We talked about the prospects of genome editing for medical purposes and evolutionary mechanisms in the episode «Tail, appendix and extra nipples. How rudiments differ from atavism.»
The episode was prepared jointly with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, an international intergovernmental research organization in the science city of Dubna (Telegram/VK/YouTube).
