Syria strongly condemns new Western sanctions against Belarus

CAIRO, Aug 13 Syria strongly condemns new Western sanctions against Belarus, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The United States on Wednesday expanded the sanctions list for Belarus by adding several organizations to it, including the Minsk Civil Aviation Plant and the Belavia air carrier. In turn, Canada imposed sanctions against the Ministry of Defense and the internal troops of Belarus. In addition, the UK imposed sanctions against six Belarusian enterprises.

“The Syrian Arab Republic strongly condemns the new package of sanctions and restrictions recently imposed by Western countries on the friendly Republic of Belarus, the hostile statements of Western officials and their attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of Belarus,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a social network.
The US sanctions regime against Belarus was initiated in 2006 by a decree of President George W. Bush. Since then, the US and the EU have been consistently expanding sanctions pressure on Minsk. Thus, earlier this week, the UK imposed sanctions against six Belarusian enterprises, including plants for the production of optical-electronic and radio-electronic products and the Orsha Aircraft Repair Plant.

Prior to this, the European Union also imposed sanctions against three industrial enterprises of Belarus and announced a ban on the export to the country of goods and technologies that contribute to its military and technological improvement. A ban was also imposed on the import to Belarus of firearms and ammunition, as well as goods and technologies suitable for use in aviation and the space industry.
