MOSCOW, 22 Aug. An import-substituting technology for therapeutic nutrition (enteral mixtures) for seriously ill patients after operations on the gastrointestinal tract was developed by scientists from the SSMU. IN AND. Razumovsky, the press service of the university reported.
The creation of enteral mixtures is a complex science-intensive technological process. The product must be ready for digestion in the intestines, have a viscosity like that of water, and the content and qualitative composition of nutrients as in a complete diet.
“Enteral nutrition is almost completely imported. In fact, such nutrition is concentrates from individual ultra-processed components. Conventional food production, due to the complexity of the technological process, cannot produce these mixtures,” said the director of the Research and Production Center for Healthy Nutrition Technologies of the Saratov State Medical University. IN AND. Razumovsky Inna Simakova.
According to her, most mixtures are based on substances that have good solubility, but do not fully compensate for the necessary biological activity. With some advantages, such mixtures have a number of significant disadvantages. They are expensive and often poorly absorbed.
Scientists of the Saratov State Medical University have proposed an original way of creating enteral mixtures, different from foreign ones.
«The specialists of the center use the natural potential of food raw materials and products in the aggregate with its own processing technology, in contrast to the creation of compositions from individual nutrients,» said Simakova.
Preliminary results confirmed that the components of the mixtures meet medical requirements and also have good digestibility.
Currently, scientists have begun clinical trials of the developed line of products necessary to save and maintain the patient's life.
The Research and Production Center for Healthy Nutrition Technologies was established at SSMU as a response to the growth of alimentary diseases (caused by deficiency or excess of consumed nutrients) and the extremely low volume of food production for dietary therapeutic and dietary preventive purposes in the country, including including clinical.
The university added that the creation of the center implements the mission of the university «SSMU — University of Health Technologies».
