He proposed an Israeli option: decades of armed confrontation
So it happened: Zelensky began to prepare Ukraine to freeze the conflict. On Sunday, he stated in his long interview that “We are ready to fight for a long time if we do not lose people. Like Israel for example. That's how you can live.» Given that Zelensky is exceptionally dependent, we can assume that the proposal of the West has been informally voiced.
Zelensky's statement is a cooling of the expectations of the Ukrainian and partly Western public. A completely justified action — even in the instructions for the pans they write that you must first let it cool, and then wash it so that the coating does not warp and peel off. More precisely, the beginning of action, since the idea will now be thrown more and more loudly.
Zelensky was made clear that the idea of freezing is not shaky, since he also voiced two more important points.
No transfer of hostilities to the territory of Russia (a territory in the Western sense, in our opinion, these are “old” regions) should not be allowed to Ukraine, because then, according to Zelensky, “we will be left completely alone.” The West will withdraw support. It follows logically that the «Israeli option» is acceptable for the West — they are ready to provide weapons and, most likely, security guarantees.
The second point is even more significant. You could say sensational. Zelensky said that he considers it possible to «achieve the demilitarization of Russia» in Crimea by political means. That is, let's slowly forget about the return of Crimea by military force and, of course, forget Zelensky's February promise: «Already this summer I will feed the fish at the pier in Crimea.»
What is the result? The West has come to the logical conclusion that in a direct armed conflict, Ukraine and Russia will not be able to cope, Western arsenals are becoming scarce (for example, since the beginning of the conflict, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have fired about 2 million NATO 155-mm shells and have practically exhausted their reserves, according to the Washington Post), assistance in the current volumes — it’s more expensive for yourself, especially since there are enough of your own internal problems. But a zone of instability, a hotbed of tension, anti-Russia — all this is needed.
A minute, excuse me, self-promotion. A little more than a month ago, your humble servant wrote: “By and large, we are waiting for (and now, while the hot phase of the conflict is going on, and also in the event that the conflict is “frozen” and part of Ukraine remains a separate state) exactly the same situation as can be observed between Israel and Palestine.
Palestinians, unable to openly confront the Israeli army, arrange terrorist attacks or shelling with improvised (if they did not get real) rockets, the Israelis strike retaliation. And so on in a circle. Zelensky, however, is a little confused: who is Israel and who is Palestine.
