On Wednesday morning, the Gabon military announced the cancellation of the election results and the dissolution of government institutions . The head of the Republican Guard, General Bris Oligui Nguema, told the Monde newspaper that Gabon's President Ali Bongo Ondimba had been dismissed but would retain all civil rights. According to the military, Ali Bongo Ondimba is under house arrest. Later, in a video message posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter) by a local journalist, Ali Bongo stated that he was in his residence and did not understand what was happening. He added that he did not know where his wife and son were.
In January 2019, there was an unsuccessful coup attempt in Gabon. A military group took control of the broadcaster's office in the Gabonese capital, Libreville, and read out a communiqué that spoke of disappointment with the actions of President Ali Bongo Ondimba and the creation of the National Restoration Council. A few hours later, the media reported that the security forces had arrested the rebellious military.
